WHS 60 Quarterly Luncheon – September 13th

We surely missed all of you who were not able to make our quarterly luncheon. There were 41 in attendance. This is truly remarkable. Other classes who get together may have approximately 6 people to attend….and those are usually women. We had about as many men at our luncheon as we did women. It is so great that our graduates care about being reconnected with one another that they make the special effort to travel from wherever their destination. Our organizer, Sissie Blair Shandalow, has to travel from Rockwall, Tx. Our fearless leader, Tim Lasseter Latta, travels from Ft. Worth. We had others from Georgetown, Cleburne, Dallas, San Antonio, Arlington, Harker Heights, and Temple—just to name a few of the towns.

Sissie announced that our next luncheon will be in early December–probably on a Saturday. We still have some graduates who work and are unable to attend during the week. Therefore, in the future, the day of the week may be alternated to allow everyone a chance to attend. Tim announced that approximately mid-October 2018 will be our next reunion. Keep this in mind when you start scheduling things for next year. The exact date will be announced later as Waco must always obtain the Baylor Football schedule prior to any decision being finalized. However, with BU football as it is right now, that may not be much of a problem–the hotels may be most willing and able to give us a good room rate if no improvements are made with the Baylor Bear football team.

I was humbled as I was presented a cute ‘grape-themed’ card  from the “whole bunch” and a lovely gift certificate for my part with the Waco Town Crier. I am most grateful to have received this but feel very unworthy. The Waco Town Crier is successful because of all of YOU who send in items of interest, photos of yourselves making happy memories, and all the other information that you report to me so that I may pass along to others. My gratitude to everyone is unable to be put into words. Please, please keep up the good work with your participation in being an active part of our wonderful WHS class of 1960.

Our Website

Elizabeth Bentley has our website, www.whs60.org, completed. Things look fantastic. You must go on-line and check out all the tabs. There are pictures from past reunions since our 40th….our directory is current thanks to Janet Hurta (hurtagj@aol.com),…. our IN MEMORIAM section is absolutely unbelievable, and other tabs with most interesting items. Other WHS classes will be so jealous when they see our website. I will include Elizabeth’s contact info as I am sure many of you will want to send your appreciation to her. Our website is most valuable to keep everyone connected–for our graduates who live far away, for those who are unable to attend our quarterly luncheons, and for those who seldom, if ever, get to a reunion but want to keep up with all of us. Also, our heartfelt thanks to Pat Payne for his generosity in financially providing this for us. Without these two people, we would not have our website.

Regarding Hurricane Harvey

Thank everyone so much for keeping all of us in the loop about our graduates who were in harm’s way with Hurricane Harvey. I feel our graduates built their lives and homes “on solid ground” because our graduates fared very well, indeed, in the midst of all the flooding and destruction that we witnessed with this storm. We have not heard from everyone but so far all reports we got were good. That says so much because things could have been so bad. The Lord has truly blessed our class. The last people who reported were:

Cynthia (Copeland) Studenko – Katy, TX
“Rode out the storm at Lake Limestone. My neighbors said water came within 2 ft of the door but did not enter the house. However, no one can get out of the subdivision because of high water at the entrance. I won’t go back till next week because of all the problems and lack of groceries and gas. My daughter’s house escaped flooding from storm but might flood because of controlled release of water from the reservoir by the city. It has been unbelievable and will cause problems for months to come. Appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers.”

Gayla (Miller) Webb – Katy, TX
Gayla reports that her Houston home stayed safe and dry.

Charlotte (Suttle) Kleibrink –
“I came to Waco for 6 days to see my sister so I was high and dry. I had a little water in my garage, but that is all.”

Mickey (Lucy Caperton) Nelson – Conroe
“We are fine and our children are fine…many friends not so good.”

Regarding Hurricane Irma

Again, our graduates fared well–at least, from those who have reported to us. I would imagine Pat Payne will write something about his experience with the storm as soon as he is able to take a breath and recuperate from all the work he has been doing since Irma raged through his area.

Out & About

Jim Monnig has been busy this past summer. He and his wife, Mimi, went to a yoga place in Rhinebeck, New York. At the left is  a picture of Jim with the teacher of the course.

Earlier in the summer Jim and Mimi traveled to the Red Rocks park near Denver, Colorado. The picture (right) is of Jim and one of the kids. He said they had “a few”…which we can tell by the bottles in their hands. Hmmmm…hope they had a designated driver. However, Jim would probably know of a good lawyer who could come to his aid, (if necessary), don’t you think?

Rik Spencer, Judy Spencer, Bev Murphy Wells at Time and Again Restaurant in Greenwood, Indiana, (left) tried to connect via FaceTime with the Waco quarterly luncheon group who met at Casa on September 13. There were 41 graduates at Casa that day and things were just too loud for either end to hear. It was a wonderful idea and maybe the second time around will work better. Bev says she will bring her laptop and hopefully be at a quieter location when the connection is attempted. It is always so special when our graduates can get together…be it 3 in Indiana, 41 in Waco, or a few in other locations. The idea is get together and make some happy memories. Have you thought about getting a group together in your town???

Ken Baker and David McPhail attended a baseball game at ‘The Depot’, the new baseball stadium in Cleburne. The game featured the Cleburne Railroaders against the Wichita Wing Nuts…I believe the visiting team won the game.

From Our Graduates

Betty (Barrett) Reaties:
“I really enjoy hearing about old friends. Bill and I just completed a 64 day RV Trip from Midwest City, OK to Washington DC, down the coast to Florida and then cross country home. I’m so glad we got home before Hurricane Harvey.”

Cynthia (Kirkland) Mazza asked her 102 year old mother the secret to her longevity. These were some of Mrs. Kirkland’s secrets:

  • Have a relationship with the Lord God ( doesn’t mean religion)– Try to please God –(Faith got me through the trying times)
  • Good habits and Good decisions
  • Love my family
  • LOVE

To enhance my mind:

  • Read newspaper daily front to back
  • Read devotional books
  • Work crossword puzzles and Word search puzzles
  • When going to sleep , count backwards 100, 99, 98
  • I Love to watch football and basketball

Things I never did:

  • Smoke
  • Drink
  • Exercise
  • Watch what I ate

Oh boy, do I like the part about no exercise and eat what you want. I think I can handle that!

Blast From The Past

Linda (Shelby) Lyons was doing some cleaning out and ran across these pictures. Some were taken at Sanger Elementary, for a hint. Maybe others at Fishpond? Some have been recognized; do you recognize any others?
